đ Looking Back at Warren Zevon
The Night Warren Zevon Left the âLate Showâ Building - The Ringer
Warren Zevon appeared on Late Show With David Letterman on October 30, 2002. That summer, he had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Doctors gave him a few months to live. To say goodbye to the musician who had graced his stage dozens of times over the previous two decades, Letterman devoted a full episode to him. There were no Hollywood stars promoting a movie, no musical guests debuting a new single. It was just Zevon. He and Letterman chatted, and then he played three songs.
The Ringer does some great stuff, but this is right near the top. Looking back at an amazing moment where Warren Zevon got to say goodbye to the world. Zevon is both highly regarded and still underrated as a songwriter. If you have never listened I have linked one Greatest Hits album from the 1980s, but go look for more.
The Media Lets the GOP Dictate the News
This is not about Fox News or OAN, this is about the âmainstreamâ news. In 2014 it was Ebola, then it was the Caravan in 2018, and now the GOP decide the issue of the day is crime. So what does your local news channel do? They get to work doing the work for the Republican party. Of course left out of the coverage is how the GOP run cities and states have higher crime rates, want more guns on the street, and oppose everything that could lower the crime rate.
That's a huge cop-out. The fact is, shootings in NYC have been basically flat for 2 years, but mentions of shootings in local news spiked from 100/mo in Jan 2021 to over 800/mo now.

đ The Verge on Twitter
Welcome to hell, Elon - The Verge
You fucked up real good, kiddo.
Twitter is a disaster clown car company that is successful despite itself, and there is no possible way to grow users and revenue without making a series of enormous compromises that will ultimately destroy your reputation and possibly cause grievous damage to your other companies.
I say this with utter confidence because the problems with Twitter are not engineering problems. They are political problems. Twitter, the company, makes very little interesting technology; the tech stack is not the valuable asset. The asset is the user base: hopelessly addicted politicians, reporters, celebrities, and other people who should know better but keep posting anyway. You! You, Elon Musk, are addicted to Twitter. Youâre the asset. You just bought yourself for $44 billion dollars.
Nilay Patel who is really smart on the issues surrounding twitter really nails this. What gives Twitter the oversized influence it has in society are the power brokers that use it. From heads of state to every journalist, Twitter is where they play. Now Elon comes in with the promise of less moderation and a more âopenâ network that would do nothing but push the people you need away. Good luck with that.
